IELTS Speaking Parts Two and Three on Hospitality

Student A- Examiner

“Now I’d like you to give a short presentation. I’d like you to speak for one or two minutes on the topic I will give you. First you have one minute to prepare what you are going to say. You can make notes to help you if you wish. Here is your topic” (Hand over now).

Talk about a time when you visited someone else’s house

You should say:

When and how you were invited

How you replied to the invitation

If you took anything with you

What you did in that person’s house

And say if you prefer socialising in people’s homes or in restaurants etc.

After a maximum of one minute, interrupt the preparation by saying something like “Okay?”, “Please start speaking when you’re ready” or “Please start your presentation (now)”.

If the candidate speaks for less than a minute, gesture that they should continue. If they continue speaking after 2 minutes interrupt them by asking them a question about what they said.

For 4 minutes, continue the discussion with more general questions on the topic of ‘hospitality’, for example:

“Do people your age usually prefer to have parties at home or go out to a restaurant, bar etc?”

“In your country, does the person who invites someone out for dinner always pay?”

“Are there any rules or customs in your country you have to think about when you are invited to someone’s house?”

“Are there any topic you shouldn’t talk about in a social occasion?”

“Do you think people are becoming more relaxed about those kinds of rules?”

After 4 minutes (not before!), finish the test by saying:

“Thank you. That is the end of the test”
