BULATS Speaking on the topic of change

You are going to give a short presentation.  You have a choice of three topics.  Choose one that you feel you can talk about.  You have one minute to prepare your talk.  Then you will have one minute to speak about it.  You can make notes if you wish.

 

 A: Speak about a change in your working life. Your talk should include:

  • Why the change happened
  • How big a change it was
  • How you initially felt about it

And say if your feelings about it changed or not and why.

 

 

 B: Talk for one minute about a change in this town or the town where you come from. Please include:

  • Why the changed happened
  • What effects it had
  • How people felt about it

And say whether you think that it was a change for the better or not, and why.

 

 

 C: Talk about a change in the economy of this or another country. Things to talk about:

  • What happened
  • What the consequences have been and might be
  • How people are reacting to that change

And say if you think it will turn out to be a positive thing or not, and why.

 

 

BULATS Speaking Part Three task on the topic of change

Candidate

The examiner is a consultant who you have asked to suggest how your company should be changed. Ask the examiner about their recommendations for these things:

 Company organisation

 Branding

 Meetings

And any other information that you think is relevant. Start the conversation whenever you

are ready.

Do you agree with the changes the examiner suggested or not, and why?

 

Then discuss this question with the examiner:

How useful is it to get in outside consultants?

Examiner

You are a consultant who has been asked to suggest how the candidate’s company should change. Answer their questions about these things with this information:

 Company organisation – Fewer layers of management and few departments

 Branding – Eliminate the two least successful brands

 Meetings – Cut down on business travel and invest that money in state-of-the-art teleconferencing equipment

You can also supply other information, but let the candidate lead the conversation.

Then discuss this question with the candidate:

How useful is it to get in outside consultants?

You can also give your own opinion and ask other questions to keep the conversation going, but let the candidate do most of the talking.

Candidate

The examiner is a successful businessman/ businesswoman and you are a business journalist. Ask the examiner questions about major changes that they made to their company. Questions to include:

 Reasons for the change

 Actions taken

 Effects of the change

And any other information that you think is relevant. Start the conversation whenever you

are ready.

Then discuss this question with the examiner:

How can businesses make sure they make the correct changes?

Examiner

You are a successful businessman/ businesswoman and the candidate is a business journalist who wants to ask you about major changes you made in your company. 

Answer their questions with this information:

 Reasons for the change –New competing brand rapidly catching up

 Actions taken – Relaunch

 Length of contract – Regained market share and growth of competitor almost stopped.

You can also supply other information, but let the candidate lead the conversation.

Then discuss this question with the candidate:

How can businesses make sure that they make the correct changes?

You can also give your own opinion and ask other questions to keep the conversation going, but let the candidate do most of the talking.
