CPE sentence transformations reversi game

for Cambridge Proficiency Use of English Part Four

with real language points from Cambridge Proficiency Examination Papers 1 Tests 3 and 4

Instructions for teachers

Cut up one set of cards per group of three or four students, with both versions of each transformation attached to each other, i.e. two cells of the table in each card. Don’t cut between the two sides of the card.

Give out the cards and ask students to fold them so that the two versions are on different sides of the card and put them in one column on the table in front of them to represent a ladder. To win the game, a student must go from the bottom of the ladder to the top without making any mistakes, saying (exactly) what is on the other side of the card each time. If they make any mistakes, they slip right down to the bottom of the ladder and play passes to the next person. Each person always starts at the bottom and must do the whole thing in one go to win. If they are correct, the card stays the other way round so the next time it must be tried the other way round.

As in the real exam, students cannot change the word given, meaning they can’t change “rises” to “rise”, “rose”, “risen”, etc.

If they get stuck you can:

–       Let them look at both sides of all the cards to try and memorise them for two minutes

–       Work together rather than competing with each other (but with the same rules about doing the whole thing in one turn)
