Instructions for teachers

It may be better to blow the text and slips of paper up to A3 size.

Instructions for students

Read out the whole text below, then cover one of the words with a slip of paper. Your partner must read the same text out including the missing word. Repeat until you’ve covered the whole text, the teacher stops you, or you give up.

After finishing, without looking at the text again try to remember words and phrases with these functions:

Speculating

Similarities

Differences

Check with the text, then brainstorm more words and phrases with the same functions into the spaces above.

Text to cover up

Well,

first

of

all

I

guess

the

places

are

quite

similar.

They

both

show

places

that

you

could

call

rural.

You

certainly

couldn’t

describe

either

of

them

as

cities.

Both

places

seem

fairly

green,

and

I

would

imagine

that

they’re

pretty

peaceful

and

have

clear

air.

They

both

have

water

as

well,

although

the

top

one

appears

to

be

the

sea

and

the

other

a

small

river.

I

suppose

the

most

obvious

difference

is

climate.

The

first

looks

much

colder!
